While reading about some of Mandela’s accomplishments and reflecting on the impact he had on the world, I stumbled across this amazing monument dedicated to him. It is the work of South African artist Marco Cianfanelli. It was revealed in September of last year to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of Mandela’s arrest by apartheid police in 1962.
The image is composed of 50 steel columns (one for each year), ranging in height from around 21 to 29 feet. It is located in Howick, South Africa, a small town a little more than 50 miles south of Durban.
