Last month, the Islamic State released a video in which one of their fighters beheaded American journalist James Foley.
At the end of that video, the militant group showed images of Steven Sotloff (another kidnapped American journalist), warning that he would meet the same fate if the United States refused to concede to the terms being by the extremist state.
Now, it would seem that they have followed through on that threat. Earlier today, an Islamic State video surfaced that appears to show another one of their militants beheading Sotloff.
Before he was murdered, Sotloff was forced to read the following message, addressed to President Obama:
“You’ve spent billions of US taxpayers’ dollars and we have lost thousands of our troops in our previous fighting against the Islamic State, so where is the people’s interest in reigniting this war?”
After Sotloff read his statement, his executioner took over, saying,
“I’m back, Obama, and I’m back because of your arrogant foreign policy towards the Islamic State… despite our serious warnings.
We take this opportunity to warn those governments that enter this evil alliance of America against the Islamic State to back off and leave our people alone.”
The executioner concluded by threatening the life of yet another: a British man who is currently being held captive by the Islamic State.
The authenticity of the video still has to be verified, but most experts are saying it appears to be real.
It’s still somewhat unclear what specific terms the Islamic State was demanding in exchange for Sotloff’s life. In Foley’s case, the Islamic State demanded a ransom of $132.5 million.
The United States’ official stance is that we (as a country) do not negotiate with terrorist groups. However, the government does allow individuals and groups to negotiate for loved ones if they can come up with the money themselves.
