As part of their 125th Anniversary edition last October, National Geographic decided to publish a series of pictures predicting what the average American would look like in the year 2050. Here’s some of the images (click an image to see full size version):
Did you think those were photoshopped? If so, you’d be wrong. National Geographic predicted that by 2050, the “average American” will be of mixed race. So for their anniversary issue, they hired world famous photographer Martin Schoeller to take pictures of different mixed race people.
Their prediction is backed up by plenty of data. The year 2000 was the first time the Census Bureau even allowed people to select more than one race- 6.8 million people did so. By 2010, that number had increased by more than 30% to 9 million.
In 2010, 15% of new marriages were between members of different races, according to the Wall Street journal, who also created this graphic showing the percentage of mixed-race marriages state by state.
Hawaii has the highest rate of interracial marriage at just over 42%. Presently, mixed-race couples account for 8.4% of the total marriages in the US.

This is what its aaallllll about. There are very wealthy people out there trying to stop this evolution with propoganda and other social weapons but you can’t stop nature. Good luck! LOL.
oh right so it will take until 2050 for americans to be as multicultural as most of the other developed countries. makes sense
Just wait until about 2200. The entire world population will be a nondescript, tan skinned, brown haired, brown eyed person with a Chinese last name. And judging by the looks of that woman in the picture at the top, globalization is a very good thing 😉
Like marriage will still be a thing in 2050. Who was my baby daddy again? Yeah that’s now, so a few more decades of that and people gonna be laughing so hard at these statistics. It would only take a few thousand people and selective breeding with multiple partners to swing this in any direction you wanted.
So, in short, in the future we will all be sexy as hell, but with a somewhat weird mouth? Am I alone to think that the selected pictures seems to be rather in the same range of subjective beautiful rather than a representative mix of plausible mixed ethnicity? Children of the future will maybe watch us single raced people in pictures and tell : “Whao… Aren’t they photo-shopped to be grotesque? Why are all their facial traits so exaggerated? Is it a caricaturist idea to modify old pictures so that racial stereotypes endure longer?”
No, seriously, today’s average person would look like Cro Magnon in a crowd of those models.
Also, by these pictures, National Geographic assume that by 2050, Americans will have solved their obesity problem and that the average person will be slim to skinny. Was some reference to food shortage taken in account by the original article?
